Skating through midterms?

This morning our whole class survived the midterm. It may have taken a bit longer than expected, but we were all glad when Adam bought us cookies. In the afternoon, Mik Laczkovich, a Hungarian mathematics professor, came to our class and taught us about recursive sequences, particularly when describing infinite sequences.

After the midterm, we got to go have lunch! Kate H and Tess decided to go to Ramenka, as it was highly recommended. Tess, a very patient teacher, had to show Kate H how to use chopsticks. But the food was delicious (especially once you know how to use the utensils!). It was exactly what we needed after our test. The whole inside of the restaurant is full of steam, which is perfect for warming up after waiting outside in the cold for the busses.

Jess, Catherine, Zareef, Aaron, Justin, and six other people (don’t worry, we had a reservation) went to dinner at an Indian restaurant called Indigo. The ginger lemonade was to die for, the chicken curry was perfectly spiced, and afterwards, a couple of us went out for chimney cakes! Looking for a delectably warm treat on a cold night in January? Chimney cakes! Intrigued by the idea of cylindrical food? Chimney cakes! Craving a continuous spiral of doughy goodness rolled in the topping of your choice? You heard it here- chimney cakes are the dessert for you!

Meanwhile some of us went to Kazinczy utca, a great street with lots of restaurants to choose from, for dinner. Kate A and Sarah went to Ramenka while Mattie, Eva, Tess, Sam, and Kate H went to a tiny restaurant called Bors GasztroBár. The inside has just enough space for a counter to order at and across from the counter, a bar with six stools. But we managed to crowd in there and have delicious food to boot! They offer sandwiches and soups as their main dishes; each sandwich has a creative name. Some of us got the “Barack Obama” which has barbequed pork and apricots while others tried the “French Lady” which had chicken and a raspberry-onion sauce. The staff was super friendly (one of them even posed in our picture!) and made sure to help us with the soup menu, which was all in Hungarian.

After dinner, the seven of us took the tram to ice skate at Városliget (City Park) per the recommendation of our Hungarian teacher, Erika. After strapping on our rental skates and walking out onto the ice, we were excited to find that the ice rink was within view of a beautiful old castle. We all had a wonderful time skating at the crowded rink, and ended up staying until the pond closed (taking only one break to munch on a warm chimney cake...yum).

Now we’re back in our hotel room, exhausted from skating, brain-dead from the midterm, and absolutely ready to fall asleep. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!

Jó éjszakát!
Jess, Eva, Kate H., and Mattie

  1. Loving your most artfully composed photos crowded with faces and atmosphere and, of course, the newsy bits about your classes and adventures. What's this about an 'arrest'? And does anyone have a pic of the chimney cake? Your blog is making winter in Comins more bearable. Thanks
    guess who
