First Official Day

The first official course day began with breakfast at the hotel before taking the metro (subway) to our school building.  Throughout the day we learned to use the metro, the bus, and the trolley, thank goodness for metro passes.
After arriving at our school building, just off the main train station as seen above, we were greeted by András, our fabulous tour guide for our morning walking tour.  We brought the snow with us to Hungary, so our two-hour tour was a tad cold, but extremely informative.  In particular, we were intrigued by the controversy surrounding the monument to Hungary's role in World War II, pictured below.

Our favorite tour destinations included Parliament square and lunch, which consisted of a Hungarian specialty: Lángos.  This lovely fried, flatbread-type food was a touch overwhelming, both in the crowdedness of the market and the messiness of the meal.  It was worth it.

After lunch, we returned to the school building, this time on our own (sort of).  Amazingly and thankfully, no one was even late for class.  We finally did math (other than calculating exchange rate and time change) with a lecture on divisibility.  For our first evening on our own, some of us went to a coffee shop, others to dinner at Ristorante Millennium da Pippo, and still others to dinner with the professors.  After a busy and cold day, we are excited to rejuvenate ourselves and recover from the rest of the jet-lag with some well-needed sleep.

Well wishes from Budapest!

  1. Thanks for the travel update and the first day insight. Sounds like all y'all are dealing with the jet lag fabulously! Particularly like the food pictures and glad to hear that there wasn't the excuse of travel exhaustion used to fall back on "safe" food.
